BERNICE BECK, loving wife, Mother and Grandmother, passed way in her 88th year. She passed peacefully at home after bravely battling illness for over 3 years. Over many decades, Bernie and her husband Edward, travelled all 50 states and Canada, visiting over 50 National Parks and National Historic places, where they hiked, camped, learned about nature, wildflowers, birds and all forms of wildlife.
Bernie is survived by her husband of 67 years Edward, her children Diane (Kevin) Lewis, Roger (Nancy) Beck and Dan (Brenda) Beck. Grandchildren Bethany, Rhiannon, Kiersten, Tyler, Nathan, and Emily. She was preceded in death by her parents William and Mary Kasten and son Ken Beck.
Bernie and Ed’s love story began when they were introduced by a mutual friend and started dating at 15, and at 15 they set a wedding date; at the age of 20 they got married on that very date: 5/1/1958.
Her biggest joy was anything family. Bernie and Ed had the privilege of playing with, teaching, spoiling, and helping their children and grandchildren grow. They traveled to many of their grandchildren’s events, both local and far, to be there to enjoy and support the family. Extended family was no exception as they would travel the country to attend as many weddings, confirmations, communions, graduations and birthdays as possible.
Bernie was a student of nature, where she learned all about the different species of birds, but her real superpower was her knowledge of flowers. She would stop at every flower on a hike to look it up in her nature book to see what it was. Soon after there was rarely the need of the book, as she knew them all. This led to her beautiful flower gardens at home, as well as her job at the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, designing and planting of the gardens you see at intersections all over Pittsburgh.
