On October 4, 2025, Cassandra “Cassie” Summerly, formerly of West Mifflin, Pennsylvania, passed peacefully from this life in hospice in Rockville, Maryland.
Born on November 2, 1942, Cassie was a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend. Cassie was predeceased by her husband, William “Big Bill” Summerly, and by her parents, Francis Patrick O’Brien and Gertrude “Bettie” O’Brien of West Mifflin. She is survived by her daughters, Stacey Morrison (Tim) of College Park, Maryland, and Erin Coffman (Jason) of Nashua, New Hampshire, by her grandchildren, Ryan Morrison of College Park, Maryland, Tyler Morrison of Arlington, Virginia, and Caitlyn Coffman of Nashua, New Hampshire, by her sister-in-law, Susan Summerly Kelly of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and by her nieces, Maggie Kelly Brown (Evan) of Valencia, Pennsylvania, and Summerly Kelly of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
A 1960 graduate of Homestead High School and a 1964 graduate of Edinboro State College, Cassie also served as a member of the Homestead High School class of 1960 reunion committee. A devoted and treasured educator, she served as an elementary school teacher for many years in the West Mifflin Area School District. She retired in 2003 as a fifth-grade teacher for Clara Barton Elementary School
Cassie’s favorite pastimes included her card club, bowling in the Tuesday Morning Girls Bowling League, and going to the movies, shopping, or out to lunch with friends. She enjoyed traveling to Florida to visit her friends and to New England for her cherished annual girls’ weekend getaways with her daughters. She loved to scrapbook and always looked forward to her scrapbooking weekends with Susie. Without a doubt, Cassie’s greatest joy came from spending time with her family and doting on her three grandchildren.
Cassie will be remembered for her wry wit, her supreme hosting talents, and her kind and loving heart. She will be forever missed immensely by all those fortunate to know and love her.
Cassie’s family would like to thank the UPMC ALS Center of Excellence and the Montgomery Hospice Casey House for their exceptional and compassionate care of Cassie during her illness with ALS.
