Douglas Scott Olson, 60, passed away on March 16, 2026, with the same quiet steadiness as the water he loved—never rushed, always moving, and always drawing people in.
Born on November 19, 1965, in Munhall, Pennsylvania, Doug was the youngest of seven siblings—Bob, Lynne, Gail, Jim, Jack, and Dave—growing up in a full, lively household that helped shape his humor, toughness, and love for a little chaos. He now joins his parents, Barbara and Bob Olson, in heaven.
Doug was a man who belonged outdoors, especially near the water. From his childhood summers at Glen Lake, Michigan—catching crayfish, wrangling snakes, and staying outside until the day was gone—to years later navigating the Pittsburgh rivers in his own boat, he never lost his sense of adventure. He was the kind of person who would risk it all for the chance to catch a bigger fish, always convinced the next cast might be the one.
Doug loved music just as much as he loved the outdoors. He loved playing the guitar, and could be found playing anything from Led Zeppelin to Neil Young, or battling it out on Rock Band where “Foreplay/Long Time” wasn’t just played, it was absolutely annihilated. Music, like everything else in his life, was meant to be enjoyed fully and loudly.
He had an “Olson sweet tooth”, and a sense of humor that never left him, even in the hardest moments. Doug had a way of making people laugh when they needed it most, cutting through grief and stress with a perfectly timed joke. He was the kind of person you still find yourself wishing you could call, just to hear what he’d say.
In recent years, his apartment overlooking the Monongahela River became a reflection of who he was—a place where the water was always in view, steady and familiar. It was there that he passed, surrounded by the people who loved him most.
Above all, Doug was a devoted husband and father. He is survived by his wife, Janie Olson, and their three daughters: Lauren (23), Christen (21), and Leah (19), who will carry forward his humor, his boldness, and his ability to make life feel like an adventure.
Please join us by wearing pastel colors to celebrate Doug's life.
