Ellen Mae Andrews (Mortimer), born July 4, 1936, born in Munhall then moved to Johnstown to raise her family with her husband, peacefully passed away on March 26, 2026, at St. Concordia at Rebecca Ridge. She was a cherished presence whose life was marked by a profound dedication to family, faith, and service.
Ellen was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, whose warm spirit and vibrant personality left an indelible mark on all who knew her. She was widely recognized for her "big personality"—a true firecracker whose greatest joy came from spending time with her beloved family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Her journey in life was guided by compassion and commitment. A graduate of West Penn Nursing School in the Class of 1957, Ellen earned her Registered Nursing Certificate, a foundation she parlayed into years of service. She dedicated much of her time as a volunteer for the Red Cross, embodying selflessness and care. Her faith was equally important to her; Ellen was deeply involved in her church community at Grove Avenue United Methodist Church in Johnstown, where she volunteered for 25 years visiting shut-ins, bringing comfort and companionship to those in need.
Ellen and her high school sweetheart and husband of 55 years, Jim Andrews, shared a lifelong partnership that was the center of her world. Together, they enjoyed camping adventures with their motor home, as well as winters spent in Florida, creating memories filled with love and laughter. She was also a master of crochet, a talent that brought both joy and relaxation.
Her family legacy is extensive and beloved. She is survived by her children: James “Jim” (Denise) Andrews, David (the late Joanne) Andrews, Janet Andrews, and Gary (Cheryl) Andrews. Her grandchildren reflect her enduring influence: Jennifer (Rohan) Ross, Trevor (Brittany), Lisa, Kelly, Jessica, Michael, Nicholas, Matthew, and Maria Andrews. The joy of her great-grandchildren—Annette & Kira Ross and Zoey Andrews—brought a sparkle to her life in her later years. Also surviving are her sister-in-laws Shirley Waldron and Leona (Jay) Wells, along with numerous nieces and nephews who will forever hold dear the memories of her spirited nature.
Ellen was preceded in death by her husband James R. Andrews, parents Sylvester and Hildur (Hansen) Mortimer, and her brother Robert Mortimer, whose wife Norma survives him.
A visitation to honor and celebrate Ellen’s life will be held on April 1, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at New Life Through Christ West Homestead, located at 515 W 8th Ave, Homestead, PA 15120. The funeral service will follow at the same location from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. Friends and family are invited to come together to share in remembrance, offering support and paying tribute to a woman whose warmth, strength, and love enriched all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Ellen Mae Andrews will be remembered not only for her acts of kindness and devotion but also for a life lived fully and with great heart. Her legacy continues through her family and the countless lives she touched throughout her years. May her memory be a blessing and a source of comfort to all. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Red Cross in Ellen's honor.
