Evelyn A. (Milko) Barkes

Evelyn A. (Milko) Barkes, 98, of West Mifflin, on Sunday, March 16, 2025 at Paramount Senior Living South Hills. Evelyn was born in Braddock on October 10, 1926. She grew up in Homestead and Munhall, graduated from Munhall High School, and earned B.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of Pittsburgh. She taught Spanish and English at West Mifflin North High School, where she was known as an intense, enthusiastic educator who constantly endeavored to care for, challenge, and inspire her students. In retirement, she traveled extensively and was well known for her daily extended constitutionals which she continued well into her 90s. She remained perceptive, sharp, and strong-willed throughout her hospice care. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Rose (Frinsco) Milko; husband Raymond F. Barkes; brother John Milko, Jr.; sisters Rose Halko, Elsie Esken Boisko, and Gertrude Rusnak; nephews Robert Halko and Kenneth Halko; and niece Mary Lou (Kirmeyer) Siesky. She is survived by her son, Kevin G. (Cynthia) Barkes; her grandchildren, Douglas (Angela) Barkes and Sara Kay (Brian) Salopek; her great-grandchildren Leanna Salopek and Joelle Barkes; her nieces Nancy Klasnick, Shirley Milko, Andrea (Wayne) Shacklock, Bonnie Brissenden, and Patricia (Louis) Theriault; her nephews Timothy Rusnak, Harry (Janice) Esken, and John Milko; and many grand and great grand nieces and nephews. 

Family and friends received at the George Irvin Green Funeral Home, Inc., 3511 Main Street, Munhall 15120, 412-462-6394 on Monday, March 31, from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM, where a Memorial Service will be held that evening at 8 PM. Inurnment in Braddock Catholic Cemetery will take place the following day and will be private.
