Mark Patrick Besnak, 70, a lifelong resident of Munhall, Pennsylvania, passed away on October 16, 2026. He was the son of the late Mary Jane (Perhac) McDowell and Eugene Besnak and was also preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Todd Edmondson.
Above all, Mark was a devoted family man. He shared 42 years with his beloved Luann Patterson, and together they built a life filled with love and memories. He was immensely proud of his children, Audra (Besnak) Zillifro and John Besnak. Being a grandfather brought him tremendous joy. He adored his grandsons, William, John, and Nicholas, and was eagerly awaiting the arrival of his fourth grandson, Charles Mark.
Mark spent much of his working life as an independent truck driver, having also worked in the steel mills and for the Borough of West Homestead. His dedication to providing for his family meant his children never felt they went without, even when times may not have been easy.
Mark was truly cut from a different cloth. Known for his quick wit, sharp one-liners, and unmistakable smart mouth, he always had a clever comeback ready. He was the first person family and friends called when something needed fixing or someone needed help, and he rarely hesitated to lend a hand.
In October 2023, Mark was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Although the disease eventually limited his physical abilities and ability to communicate, it never took away the sparkle in his eyes. Those closest to him knew that, given the choice, Mark would have kept right on going.
Mark is survived by Luann Patterson; his daughter, Audra Zillifro (Alex); his son, John Besnak; his grandsons, William, John, and Nicholas Zillifro; and his expected fourth grandson, Charles Mark Zillifro. He is also survived by his sister, Kathee Besnak; his brother, Matt Besnak (Judi); his nieces and nephews, Joshua Edmondson, Jenna Edmondson, and Jake Pons; and numerous cousins whom he cherished deeply.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Mark’s longtime friends who continued visiting and spending time with him throughout his illness. Their friendship and presence brought comfort when it was needed most. Special thanks are also extended to his caregiver, Lessie, for the compassion and dedication she showed Mark and the care she provided throughout his illness.
Family and friends will be received on Monday, October 19, 2026 from 2 - 4 & 6 - 8PM at the George irvin Green Funeral Home, Inc., 3511 Main Street, Munhall (412-461-6394) where a Blessing Service will be held on Tuesday, October 20, 2026 time later.
