It is with great sadness that we share the unexpected passing of Michaelene (Mickey) Singer, surrounded by her family, on November 15, 2023.
Mickey was born on December 5, 1937 and was married to the late William Singer, her loving husband of 50 years. She was preceded in death by her parents, Michael and Mary Druga, her brother, Ronald (Carol) Druga, and her sister, Lauren (Walt) Everly.
She is survived by her children Ronita (Kenny) Gidel, Scott (Joan) Singer, and Bill Singer. She is beloved Nanny to her grandchildren Eva (Craig) Mitchell, Julie (Brian) Chalmers, Scott Jr, (Jessica) Singer, Eric (Angela) Singer, Nicholas, and her great-grandchildren (she lovingly called her “little people”) Dominic, Joseph, Braydon and Alaina. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, who lovingly called her “Aunt Mick.”
Mickey was deeply devoted to her family and dearly loved her children and grandchildren. But her ultimate blessings and the greatest loves of her life were her great-grandchildren. She cherished every moment she spent with them either playing at her home or while watching their soccer or baseball games, dance recitals, or school programs. They each held a very special place in their Nanny’s heart.
Her many talents and passions included cooking, baking, gardening, crocheting, knitting, sewing and quilting. Her love of quilting began in the 80’s when she became a member of the Three Rivers Quilters. For many years she made and delivered countless baby quilts to the NICU at West Penn Hospital. For more than 20 years she was a “Blanketeer” with Project Linus, making hundreds of quilts and fleece blankets that were given to children who were seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need.
Mickey was a lifelong parishioner of Holy Angels Church and for the past 18 years has been the heartbeat and inspiration of the Crochet Circle, a small, dedicated group of ladies who have voluntarily made hundreds of prayer shawls, ‘lapghans,’ hats and scarves, and baby blankets that she and the others have distributed to charities and organizations that provide help to veterans, the homeless, elderly and children. For several years the group has made baptismal afghans that are gifted to each baby that is baptized at Blessed Trinity Parish churches.
Mickey was a selfless, giving and loving person whose love and creativity was expressed in everything she made and did. She shared her love of quilting and crochet with others and taught many of the people she met in the organizations she belonged to. Her kindness and talent will continue to be spread through the quilts and afghans her “students” gift to others. Those she has touched through her charitable work will remember her kindness and generosity, and they are sure she is sewing and tidying up in heaven as she reunites with her loved ones and friends.
Visitation for family and friends will be Sunday, November 19, from 2-7 p.m. at George I. Green Funeral Home, 3511 Main Street, Munhall, PA 15120. Mass of Christian burial will be held at Holy Angels Church, 408 Baldwin Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15207 on Monday, November 20, at 10:30 a.m.
