Verna Smith

September 11, 1926 — February 23, 2017

Verna Smith

Verna was born in Whitaker on Sept. 11, 1926 the daughter of Joseph and Veronica (Kish) Mihalko.  Known as Vee to her friends and family, she was the third of seven children. She worked at Duquesne University as a cook up until she retired in 1998.

She had an eye for fashion. She always matched from head to toe. She could never be seen in public without matching shoes and gloves to complete her look.

Christmas was her favorite holiday. The whole house was always decorated from top to bottom, room to room. Walking into Vee’s home at Christmas was like entering a scene in a Norman Rockwell painting, the tree decorated perfectly, complete with a whole village underneath. She would continue this Christmas tradition for her family well into her eighties.

Verna passed away on Feb. 23, 2017 in UPMC McKeesport after her ten-year battle with dementia.

Dementia didn’t define who she was. It will not cloud the happy memories her family holds dear. They will remember her as the strong, independent, outspoken lady she was. A woman wise beyond her years.

Vee is survived by her children Joyce (Glenn McNeish) Smith, Bill Smith And Janet (Dan) Sikoski.  Grandchildren Christopher (Katie), Aimee (Charles), Kelly Jo, Tawsha, Billy, Ron and Jason. Great –grandchldren C.J., Corey, Natalie, Alaina, Brianna, Shiann, Dustin, Hannah, A.J., Kiara and Wilson.

Vee’s family would like to welcome family and friends to George Irvin Green Funeral Home, Inc., 3511 Main St. Munhall, 15120 (412-461-6394)  on Tuesday from    6 – 9PM and Wednesday from 2 – 4 & 6 – 9 PM not to meet in sadness, but to celebrate Vee’s ninety years of accomplishments.  Panachida service will be on Tuesday at 8 PM at the funeral home and the Funeral Service will be on Thursday in St. Elias Byzantine Catholic Church at 10 AM.  Their favorite Christmas-loving fashionista has added one more accessory to her wardrobe, Vee has gained her wings.  Vee will be taken to her Funeral Service and her final resting place by horse drawn carriage.  Please share your memories and condolences at georgeigreenfuneralhome.com
