Joseph Shields

Joseph P. Shields passed away on Sunday May 9, 2021 at the age of 91. Beloved husband of Joan (Patterson) Shields of Munhall; Loving father of Cindi (Dean) Floback of Portland, OR, Kimberly (Jeff) Shields Tuttle of West Chester, PA, and Daniel (Lidija) Shields of Marshall, Twp. PA; Cherished grandfather of Jordan, Matthew, Dylan, Jesse and Monet; Dear brother of the late Eileen Hartman, late Thomas and late James. Joe attended Munhall High School and upon graduation he joined the Army where he served in the Korean War. When Joe returned home from his tour of duty, he attended the University of Pittsburgh and graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Following graduation, he worked at Mesta Machine, and later joined US Steel where he worked for over 30 years. After his service in Korea, Joe married Joan, and they began their married life in Munhall Pa. They moved to Monroeville PA, where they raised their 3 children. Joe loved to spend time outside on his porch, which was the gathering place for the neighbors and friends alike. Joe and Joan lived in Monroeville for over 55 years. In 2014 he and Joan moved in with their son Dan and his family in the North Hills, and delighted in spending time with their dear grandchildren. Joe and Joan were married for 66 years. Joe was an avid golfer and continued playing the links into his 80s. He especially enjoyed trouncing his nephews in the family reunion golf outing. Joe also was an ardent bowler, always looking for that elusive 300 game, but mostly just enjoying the company of his friends. He loved spending time at the family cabin in Deep Creek, Maryland with his brothers and sisters and the many nieces and nephews. He had the patience of Job when teaching kids to waterski and loved gathering the family around a massive bonfire. But more than anything, Joe loved spending time with his family. He was a devoted husband and father, a faithful friend and will be deeply missed by all. Family and friends will be received on Thursday, May 13, 2021 from 6 – 9 PM at the George Irvin Green Funeral Home, 3511 Main Street, Munhall PA 15120 ( 412-461-6394 ).
