Susan Chadderdon Crist, age 69, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She was surrounded by loved ones as she stepped out into Eternity the early morning of December 19, 2019. Susan was the daughter of the late Dolores Chadderdon Batcho and the late Howard Chadderdon. She was born in Buffalo, NY on July 17, 1950. She is preceded in death by her dear son, Thomas Crist and her dear brother-in-law, Dan Ciocca. She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Greg, and her daughters Bethany Rose (Randy) of Indiana, PA, Jennifer Kraft (Jayson), Naomi Crist, and Tracy Scalise (Lenny), of Munhall, PA. She is also survived by her 8 beautiful grandchildren, Cody Johns, Ceresa Morsaint, Mike Crist, Soner Gerigiden, Jaylee and Jacob Kraft, Shelby Crist, and Savanna Scalise and her step-granddaughters, Mekayla and Allison Scalise. She leaves behind her loving sister, Deborah Ciocca. Susan was blessed to be a part of the loving Crist family of Ohio and is survived by her mother-in-law Elma Crist, sisters and brothers-in-laws Ruth and Ken Tao, Polly and Randy Young, Valerie and Tony Crist, and Amy and Scott Ferrell, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Susan’s life work was serving the Lord. She was commissioned as an officer of The Salvation Army in June 1976, in Carnegie Hall with the Overcomers' session of cadets.  She served with her husband as corps officers for over twenty years in the corps community centers of Newport, KY, Mahwah, NJ, Corning, NY, Washington, PA, Carnegie, PA and Homestead, PA. Susan held a Master’s of Education from Duquesne University. She was a Christian Counselor at Christian Counseling Associates of Western PA (CCA) for the last year and a half. Before that she was a mental health therapist who supervised the Acute Partial Hospital Program with TCV MH/MR Inc. and worked there for 20 years.

She continued her ministry for 22 year as an associate pastor at the Lincoln Place Church of the Nazarene, 2 of those years were spent pastoring Duquesne City of Hope Church of the Nazarene. She received tremendous support from her co-workers at CCA and TCV and the Lincoln Place Church Family. Even after being diagnosed with cancer that appeared to be in remission but eventually metastasized to the brain then the spine, Susan experienced and shared the ‘peace that passes understanding’ which comes only from God. She continued to work and remain active for as long as possible. As she told many people, ‘even if cancer eventually takes my life, it will NOT defeat me’; and it did not.

Susan’s family is grateful for the wonderful care she received at the Hillman Cancer Center with Dr. Ronald Stoller, Dr. David Friedland, the Radiation Oncology Department at Shadyside with Dr. Arlen Mintz and Dr. David Burton and for the continued care and support from Dr. Gordon Handelsman, her PCP.

Her family would also like to acknowledge the exceptional care she received by the doctors, nurses, and staff of The Canterbury Place at Family Hospice in Lawrenceville, PA.

Viewings will be at George Irvin Green Funeral Home in Munhall on Friday, December 27, from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm. There will be a celebration of her life beginning with a viewing at 10 am followed by a service at 11 am on Saturday, December 28, at the Lincoln Place Church of the Nazarene, officiated by her faithful pastor, Reverend Joe Stump.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests to please send donations to Manifest Ministries 501(c)3 capital fund located at Lincoln Place Church of the Nazarene or to Family Hospice in memory of Susan Crist.
